This is my Theatre

I met Sarah Slator the artistic director of This is my Theatre nearly two years ago when we both undertook director training. Since then Sarah has set up the theatre company 'This is my Theatre' and has produced a site specific tour of Romeo & Juliet. I had the great pleasure of catching up with her tonight and seeing her fabulous production. To start with tonight's performance was within the beautiful surroundings of St Peter and St Paul, Albury, Surrey. Parts of the church date back to the Saxon era and it is surrounded by beautiful grounds. The first performance of Romeo and Juliet by This is my Theatre was designed around St Botolph's church, West Sussex. As such the play had to work around the variety of locations set within the play and rework it so that the story could be told within the one space using the building itself as the set. This is theatre in its simplest form and I found that there was great beauty in its simplicity which lead to clarity in the story telling. The building caressed and supported Shakespeare's words which were delivered with great clarity and integrity from a fabulous young cast of actors. The fight scenes were choreographed with great skill by Sarah which delivered slick and believable violence leading to the murders of Mercurio and Tybalt.

The tour continues to Brighton and Arundel and if you get the chance to see this adaptation of Shakespeare's classic you should.
